‘Poor Things’

Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe

Let me count the ways! #1 it is a diamond of a script with a new language for Bella as she learns how to express herself. Then we have the deliciously, fuckibly, scarred daddy Dafoe, the father to Bella. Tied to #1 is the maliciously, magical soundtrack by Jerskin Fendrix; look for his cameo in the dance scene. Finally, the chokingly, spas*tacular choreography thanks to Constanza Macras. Apparently, they rehearsed and shot the sequence for hours having a blast the entire time. What a delicious dance experience; the Portuguese Dance is addictive! Reminiscent of the unbelievable Tim Burton approach to anything, ‘Poor Things’ provides another new way of looking at this mystical, unique and alluring world. Thank you Director, Yorgos Lanthimos for bringing it all to life so cohesively and realistically! This writer will see the movie twice to cinch it in.

The ‘Poor Things’ trailer was so beautifully effective; it completely captivated me as a must see burtonesque, fantastical romp with three of my favorite actors. It reminded me of ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘Natural Born Killers’ all at once! Emma and Dafoe are alive, logical, perfect from the beginning, making us feel invited. This warm and fuzzy father/daughter concoction continues through to Ruffalo’s exciting entrance. His delicious energy towards Baxter upon first meeting and his lurid pinch. The pinch, the voyage, the jumping, the dancing, the melodrama and the quest are new yet familiar. Emma Stone is the ethereal backbone to this beauteous tale. She accidentally leads us with Ruffalo’s guidance through a fun and love-filled first act! Alas, their honeymoon wanes and discovery kicks in for both characters, especially Bella. Duncan meanwhile learns more than he could have ever dreamt about Bella as she becomes independent and strikes out to learn all she can about life.

Enjoy ‘Poor Things’ — a really good romp!
